The English brought with them country dances, social dances in which sets of couples dance and switch partners, often at the instruction of a caller. These were optimized for dancing on village greens, such as the Wrentham Common. These country dances also influenced the modern-day contra dance, which is still popular throughout the United States, especially New England and Appalachia.
