The first ethnic group to arrive in Wrentham in the 1600s was the English. Popular music at the time in England was baroque, but this was listened to mostly among the upper-class and aristocracy. Folk songs of the 16th and 17th centuries were passed down both orally and as broadsides, sheets of paper with the words to a song printed on them and a note of what tune to sing them to. Songs found on broadsides include “Barbara Allen,” “Greensleeves,” “Lavender’s Blue,” and “Scarborough Fair.” A common type of folk song was the ballad, which tells a story. “Barbara Allen” tells a tale of a young man who dies after being rejected by the beautiful Barbara, who also dies upon hearing his funeral bells.
