Ireland shared similar social dances with England. The Irish set dance is a close relative to the English country dance, though it was based off of a court dance called the quadrille. The most famous type of Irish dance, however, is of course Irish step dance. Irish step is either danced wearing hard shoes or soft shoes, depending on the type of dance. Hornpipes and treble jigs are hard shoe dances, while reels, slip jigs, light jigs, and single jigs are soft shoe dances. Irish step is very popular in the US, especially among places of high Irish concentration.
