Music of the Irish

Irish folk music shares many similarities with English folk music, unsurprisingly, but it retains elements distinct from its neighbor’s music. Irish folk songs and ballads are often bittersweet or melancholy, like the World War I ballad “Bonny Wood Green.” Some are full of lush imagery of nature and mythology, like “The Gartan Mother’s Lullaby.” There are also Irish airs like the “Londonderry Air,” famous as the tune to the English-written “Danny Boy.”
